BODY ART:
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAN XIN, LI WEI, LIU REN, MA YANLING, AND WU YUREN |
| "Though my travels I have explored the mystic qualities of nature. Through my art, I try not only to express the magnificence of life but also the mystery of death." Whether traveling on China's famous rivers, through desolate wilderness regions, or to the roof of the world in Tibet, Yu contends that "Through my travels I have explored the mystic qualities of nature. Through my art, I try not only, to express the magnificence of life but also the mystery of death. " And so it is that through his award-winning photography Yu Yuntian shares his ongoing dialogue with nature, no longer the sole province of China's traditional ink painters. At times Yu's remarkable photos appear to be abstract images, with the scenes veiled in mystery. At other times his pictures seem more surreal. But all of Yu's photos feature his unique photographic techniques, which have made him famous in China's photography circles. In spite of photography's increasing popularity, since the 1980s the systemic teaching of photographic techniques still lags far behind painting. Until 1992 only Shenyang province's Lu Xun University had a chair devoted to photography and the Beijing Academy of Applied Arts has just recently begun to offer photography courses. Thus, most of China's contemporary photographers, studying or working at the art academies, have received their education in other disciplines. This is certainly true of Yu Yuntian, who taught in the woodcut print department at Beijing's prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts, before being appointed in 1982 as a press photographer for the CCAAC In Flight Magazine, China's major airline publication. Since that time Yu has had the opportunity to travel throughout China, documenting some of its most spectacular scenery. Yu's keen perception, exacting eye, and innovative photographic techniques, exacting eye, and innovative photographic techniques have resulted in haunting images of some of China's best known and least known locations.
